Losing Medicaid? You have next steps to check.

Use your notice to understand the next coverage steps.

Keep the letter and check the reason

Read the notice for the coverage end date, reason, and any response or appeal instructions. A missing renewal document is different from a determination that you no longer qualify. Contact your state Medicaid office about questions or possible errors.

Check other coverage promptly

You may be able to move to Marketplace coverage after losing Medicaid or CHIP. HealthCare.gov allows applications up to 60 days before that coverage ends and generally enrollment within 90 days after it ends. Confirm your state Marketplace’s process and your effective date.

Review the family member by member

Children may still qualify for CHIP or Medicaid even when a parent does not. A Marketplace application can help identify available savings and coverage options. Bring your notice and current household information; do not assume everyone needs the same plan.

Bring these questions

  • Why is my coverage ending, and is a response still needed?
  • Can my children keep Medicaid or CHIP?
  • When could replacement coverage start?
