Medigap, Plan F, and changing coverage

Know the difference between being eligible for a policy and being accepted for it.

Plan F has not disappeared

Medigap plans that cover the Part B deductible, including Plan F and Plan C, are not available to people newly eligible for Medicare on or after January 1, 2020. People eligible before that date may still be able to buy them. An existing Plan F policy was not canceled by that change.

Eligibility is not a promise of acceptance

Outside Medigap Open Enrollment or an applicable guaranteed-issue right, an insurer may use health underwriting. Confirm acceptance and effective dates before dropping another policy or assuming that leaving Medicare Advantage guarantees a supplement.

Compare premiums and remaining costs

Review Plan F alongside other available options, including Plan G. Look at the premium difference and the costs you would pay yourself. Premium changes depend on the policy and insurer; there is no guaranteed future rate advantage for one plan letter.

Utah has a specific birthday rule

Utah’s rule is for existing Medigap policyholders changing eligible coverage with their current insurer. It is not a general right to switch companies without underwriting.
